MANSFIELD, PA— A group of 14 Mansfield University Criminal Justice Administration (CJA) students, accompanied by Assistant Professor Justin Crowl, toured Muncy State Correctional Institution (SCI Muncy) on November 17.The students are also part of Lambda Alpha Epsilon (LAE), the national coed professional fraternity for CJA students.
SCI Muncy, formerly known as the Industrial School for Women, is a medium/maximum state correctional institution that houses adult female offenders. The prison serves as the diagnostic and classification center for all women entering the state prison system.
A historical overview of the prison was first presented to students by Superintendent Robert Smith, in coordination with William Frantz, deputy superintendent for Centralized Services, and Wendy Nicholas, deputy superintendent for Facilities Management.
Students were provided valuable information regarding prison culture/dynamics, the classification process, demographics of incarcerated women, and correctional careers. A guided tour of the facility followed. Students were also able to ask questions and engage in discussion with prison administrators, some of whom are MU alumni.
The students who participated in the event were Taylor Koch, Emily Galligan, Allie Mace, Maurin MacNamara, Dana Mahini, Zachary Sedun, Brandi Schildt, Colin Ohnmeiss, Sommer Gaydos, Scott Syryla, Gina LaRose, Carrie McSurdy, Bethany Weber and Shyanne McKivison.
